The 14th Mechanized Brigade “Prince Roman the Great” is one of the most experienced units of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, known for its actions during the ATO and for the valiant defense of Makariv at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, essential in preventing the encirclement of Kyiv from the west.
In the past months it has been near-constantly deployed on the Kupyansk-Svatove axis, where it represents the most reliable unit among rotations of more recently formed Brigades.
Analysis/Notes
The main fighting body of the Brigade is composed by its three Mechanized Battalions, largely equipped with BMP-1 IFVs, along with a few captured BMP-2s.
The use of Italian-donated Mod. 63 (120mm) mortars, along with standard Ukrainian M120-15s, in the organic Mortar Batteries has also been noticed in articles. Some 60mm mortars are also employed, possibly at the Company level.
The Brigade’s Motorized Infantry Battalion is likely the former 1st Motorized Battalion "Volyn", which joined the Brigade in 2015.
Humvees have been seen on the Brigade’s socials, they might be used by this Battalion.
Some Tigr IMVs were also captured at the beginning of the full-scale invasion but their employment is uncertain.1st and 2nd Rifle Battalions have been part of 14th Mechanized Brigade since at least late 2022. Most pre-2022 Brigades received this addition to rapidly boost their combat power and size.
The Tank Battalion of the Brigade seems to be mostly based on T-72M1R tanks, some of which donated by Poland and seen in the video below, alongside some captured T-72B3s.
T-84 Oplots and T-64BVs can be seen in older footage, though not in 2024.
The Brigade's Artillery Group’s 1st Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion appears to have 2S1 Gvozdikas (122mm) as its smaller caliber SPHs. However, these haven’t been seen since 2023.
The 2nd Self-Propelled Artillery Battalion uses UK-donated M109A4BE (155mm) howitzers. These are Belgian variants purchased and delivered by the UK.
The Rocket Artillery Battalion is equipped with BM-21 Grad MLRS.
The Anti-Tank Artillery Battalion apparently fields a wide variety of ATGM systems, including domestic Stugnas, donated FGM-148 Javelins and 9M113 Konkurs along with MT-12 Rapira anti-tank guns.
However, out of these only Stugna ATGMs have been recently shown. The Brigade Reconnaissance Company has a unique flag design.
“Haron” Strike Group is the main Attack UAV element, employing FPV drones. It likely serves as the Brigade’s Strike UAV Company (RUBpAK) but is not officially named as such (although this unofficial source does call it a RUBpAK).
The Anti-Aircraft Defense Battalion has been seen in action with 9K35 Strela-10 systems.
The CBRN Protection Company’s insignia (chevron) is shown below.
Several images and an extensive article show the Maintenance Battalion (“Repair and Restoration”, officially) working on multiple captured vehicles and using MAZ trucks and BREM-1 recovery vehicles.
